Did You Know?

Did you know?

We all hear the siren from the firehouse at noon each day. But the siren also exists as a warning system for our town in case of flood or tornado.

Siren Procedures
This protocol will outline the uses of the siren. We will no longer be using the siren for all fire calls. We will only use the siren in the case of natural disasters (flooding and tornadoes).
Flooding:
In the event of POSSIBLE flooding the siren will sound one long tone (same as the Noon whistle) this will be done every hour until imminent flooding or the risk of flooding has diminished.  In the event of IMMINENT flooding the siren will sound 3 times in a row. This will be done every 10 minutes for an hour and then done as needed.

Tornado:
In the event of HIGH WINDS, POSSIBLE TORNADO OR TORNADO SIGHTING the siren will be sounded 6 TIMES every 10 minutes until the risk has passed.

Volunteer Safety Gear

The Comfort Volunteer Fire Department provides two full sets of safety gear to each of their firefighters.

Bunker Gear is for structure fires and is heavily insulated against the heat a firefighter will encounter in a closed fire environment. Bunker gear consists of pants, a jacket, bunker boots, a thermo hood, helmet and heavy gloves.
Brush Gear is lighter gear that is worn more frequently by firefighters in first responder situations. A separate Jacket, pants, helmet, boots and gloves comprise this gear.

All our gear is stored in carefully so that in an emergency it is easy to put on in the order needed. Firefighters must be able to dress in 60 seconds!

Safety Plan

Located on the banks of the Guadalupe river, Comfort Texas has a history of surviving floods.  Your Volunteer Fire Department has a plan including safety, evacuation and rescue for flooding events.

BUT each family needs to make their own plan in case of flash flooding in our area. Know your evacuation route, your point of reunion and good safety procedures before the waters rise.
